How to play Globle

Globle is a daily geography puzzle. A country is hidden somewhere on the globe and you have to find it. There is no limit on guesses: every country you name is coloured by how close it is to the answer, like a game of hot and cold played on a map of the world.

Play today's Globle

The goal

Find the hidden country in as few guesses as possible. Everyone in the world gets the same country on the same day, so you can compare your score with friends. A new country appears every day at midnight in your local time zone.

Step by step

  1. 1

Type any country. Start with a guess anywhere in the world and press Enter. The first guess is a free shot: it only tells you roughly where to look next.

  2. 2

Read the colour. The country appears on the globe, shaded by its distance to the hidden country. Pale means far, orange means close, deep red means you are right next to it.

  3. 3

Spin the globe. Drag, spin and zoom to look at the area around your hottest guess. Neighbours of a dark red country are usually the best next guess.

  4. 4

Narrow it down. Keep guessing countries in the hottest direction. Each guess is listed with its distance, so you can sort by distance and see the closest one at the top.

  5. 5

Find it. When you name the hidden country it turns green, your statistics are updated and you can share your score.

What the colours mean

Every guess is shaded by its distance to the hidden country, measured from border to border.

Far away Very close Found it!

An example round

Say the hidden country is Japan. Here is how a typical round could go, with the real border-to-border distances the game uses:

#GuessDistanceWhat it tells you
1Brazil13,876 kmAlmost white: the answer is on the other side of the world.
2India3,125 kmLight orange: Asia is the right continent, but not this part of it.
3Mongolia1,639 kmWarmer: we are moving in the right direction, towards East Asia.
4China594 kmOrange: very close, the answer is a neighbour or near neighbour of China.
5South Korea190 kmRed: only 190 km away. It has to be across a narrow sea.
6Russia58 kmDeep red: Russia comes within 60 km. Only one country fits: Japan.
7JapanFound!Seven guesses. A good player would probably jump from China straight to Japan or South Korea.

Distances are measured between the closest points of the two borders, not between capitals or centres. That is why Russia, whose islands come within 60 km of Hokkaido, is hotter than South Korea.

Daily game and practice mode

The daily game is the same for everyone and counts towards your statistics: games won, current streak, best streak and average number of guesses. Your progress is saved in your browser, so you can close the page and come back later.

Want more? Switch to practice mode in the settings. Practice games pick a random country, do not affect your streak, and you can start a new one as soon as you finish.

Settings that help

Which names are accepted?

Globle knows the 197 countries recognised by the game, in the language you play in and in English. Common short forms work too: USA, UK, Holland, Czech Republic, Ivory Coast, DRC and many more. Capital letters, accents and hyphens are ignored, so cote divoire is fine. Browse the full list on the countries page.
